Other than the VIRADAPT AND GART studies, what published or anecdotal findings support the benefits of resistance testing? —Mark Majkowski, DDS

Dr. Brian Conway responds:
A number of retrospective studies have reported an association between drug resistance and therapeutic failure, and these are well referenced in the JAMA review. Another prospective study, VIRO3001, was presented by Dr. Cohen at the CROI conference in San Francisco, this past January. It shows the benefit of phenotypic resistance testing in the selection of subsequent therapy following virologic breakthrough. (8/1/2000)
